Machinable plastics
HDPE Machining
CDS machines HDPE parts from customer specifications, including liners, skid plates and non-load-bearing guides. HDPE is useful to consider when wear demands are less severe.
HDPE means high-density polyethylene. Exact grade, support, contact and environment determine whether it fits the component.
HDPE for liners, skid plates and guides
CDS machines HDPE skid plates, chute liners and non-load-bearing guides for material-handling equipment. The customer drawing establishes the profile, thickness, holes and mounting features.
The liner and its supporting structure
- Contact surfaceSliding material brings abrasion, impact and debris.
- LinerThickness, temperature and the wear requirement affect its use.
- Support and fixingThe structure and mounting affect restraint and movement.
- Contact and wear
- Sliding or rolling contact, abrasive debris, impact and lubrication influence the wear requirement. The mating surface and speed matter as much as the component name.
- Support and movement
- Span, fastener restraint and thermal movement affect how the liner or guide holds its position. Low water absorption does not make a part dimensionally unchanged.
HDPE or UHMW depends on the wear duty
Both materials belong to the polyethylene family, but molecular weight changes their behavior. HDPE can be worth evaluating for less demanding work; UHMW deserves comparison when abrasion, repeated impact or severe guide duty becomes central.
| Part demand | HDPE | UHMW |
|---|---|---|
| Sliding abrasion | A candidate for less demanding wear duties. | Worth comparing as sliding abrasion becomes a controlling demand. |
| Impact and guide contact | The load, support and actual contact determine suitability. | Repeated impact and severe guide contact are reasons to evaluate UHMW. |
| Fit and environment | Grade, heat, restraint, chemistry and documents still matter. | The same requirements apply, with creep and thermal growth needing attention. |
Neither material is universally better or cheaper. Compare the grade, geometry, machining, quantity and availability against the same operating requirements. Learn how creep and thermal movement affect UHMW parts.
Grade, environment and documentation
- Material identity
- High-density polyethylene is a family name. Manufacturer, grade, color, additives, molecular-weight class and a controlled virgin or reprocessed requirement can change the choice.
- Heat and chemistry
- Continuous and peak temperature, load, support, chemicals, concentration and exposure time act together. Outdoor exposure may introduce a UV-stabilization requirement.
- Machining and fit
- Wall sections, fastener or bearing interfaces, critical dimensions and inspection requirements affect feasibility. The actual part definition is needed to review a tolerance.
- Replacement evidence
- Wear, distortion, lost fit and heat or chemical damage help describe the existing problem. A sample does not establish the original grade, additives or cause of failure.
Food contact requires an exact grade and use-specific documentation. The material, color, food type, temperature, contact duration, repeated-use conditions and cleaning exposure must match the required declaration. Generic HDPE is not automatically food compliant.

Share your drawing and revision, or the available records for an existing part. CDS quotes machining against your specified material and finished-part requirements.
- Part requirements: Liner or guide profile, thickness, holes and recesses, with specified dimensions, tolerances and finish.
- Specified material: Full HDPE grade, color, additives and any controlled virgin, reprocessed, UV-stabilized or substitution requirement.
- Order and records: Quantity or useful quantity tiers, requested date and required material, inspection or traceability documents. Identify any specified tests for confirmation with the quote.
