ULTEM Machining

CDS machines customer-specified ULTEM parts and quotes material supply. A thermal or electrical-isolation requirement can make an exact ULTEM grade worth evaluating.

The drawing’s grade, geometry and tolerances establish the machining requirements. ULTEM is a SABIC trademark; exact branded supply and any substitute need confirmation.

Thermal duty and electrical function are separate requirements of the same component.

Temperature has to be considered with load and time

An equipment or instrument component may need to retain its geometry while supporting load at temperature. Continuous duty, short excursions and repeated heating and cooling create different requirements.

Load at temperature
Support, constraint and duration influence movement. A temperature value alone does not establish that a loaded feature will hold its position.
Cycles and mating components
Thermal cycling, ramp and cool-down, wall section and the surrounding assembly affect the dimensional requirement.
Photography plannedElectrical component mounting and isolation features
The mounting interface and isolation geometry must function under the same thermal conditions.

Thermal markers answer different questions

  1. TgGlass transition describes a change in polymer behavior.
  2. HDTHeat-deflection temperature comes from a specified load and test.
  3. RTIRelative temperature index concerns long-term property retention.
These values are not interchangeable maximum service temperatures. The named grade and its test conditions must remain attached to the data.

Insulation, static control and flame behavior

An insulating component, a static-control part and a flame requirement call for different material evidence. Check the exact grade against the requirement for your equipment.

Three separate electrical and fire requirements

  1. InsulationDielectric behavior describes resistance to electrical breakdown. Creepage, clearance and tracking also depend on the assembly.
  2. Static controlA specified resistance and test method establish the dissipation or conductivity requirement. Ordinary insulation does not establish ESD suitability.
  3. Flame behaviorThe test standard, grade, thickness, color and listing scope belong together. A material classification does not certify the finished device.
Use the exact grade’s documentation for the required function. The equipment specification establishes the finished-part acceptance requirements.

The exact stock shape and geometry matter

ULTEM is a SABIC trademark. A familiar trade name does not fully identify a resin or stock-shape product. Grade, color, reinforcement, form and permitted substitutions need to follow the drawing.

Machined features
Thin walls, pockets, deep holes, threads, sharp transitions and one-sided removal can make cutting heat and residual stress important. Filled and unfilled grades may respond differently.
Critical dimensions
Datums, flatness, positional requirements, finish and inspection conditions define what the part must achieve. Achievable tolerances depend on the specified grade, geometry and machining setup.
Exposure and purity
Chemicals, cleaning, hot water, steam, sterilization, moisture, vacuum, radiation and outgassing can add requirements beyond temperature and insulation.
Documentation scope
Medical, semiconductor, cleanroom, food-contact or other specified use needs current documents for the actual grade and conditions. The material, stock shape and finished part have different acceptance boundaries.

Component requirements

For a bobbin, insulator, standoff or housing, the function and mating interfaces determine which dimensions and electrical properties matter. A sample can explain geometry but cannot prove the original material or compliance.

When to compare alternatives

PEEK, PPS or another material may enter the comparison. Use the same thermal, electrical, chemical, purity and geometry requirements, then compare availability and quoted cost.

Your ULTEM machining quote

Share your drawing and revision, or the available records for an existing part. CDS quotes machining against your specified material and finished-part requirements.

  • Part requirements: Overall profile, bores, pockets and mounting features, with customer-specified datums, dimensions, finish and inspection conditions.
  • Specified material: Resin and stock-shape grade, manufacturer, color, reinforcement and any permitted substitute for the specified ULTEM material.
  • Order and records: Quantity or useful quantity tiers, requested date and required material, inspection or traceability documents. Identify any specified tests for confirmation with the quote.
