Body length and both end features
A standoff is a component between mounting surfaces. Its individual drawing defines the body and the geometry at each end, including any customer-specified fastening features.
- Length is the finished dimension of the individual part.
- End needs its own complete feature callout.
- Shoulder has specified dimensions and location.

- Length and outside profile
- Specify the finished body length, outside diameter or across-flats dimension. Show any shoulders, flanges, steps or counterbores with their dimensions and locations.
- End details and openings
- Distinguish plain openings from required internal or external threads. Provide the exact callout and depth for each end; do not assume the two ends are identical. Threaded-feature machining requires confirmation.
- Individual parts and hardware
- Identify separately requested inserts, fasteners or other items. Their supply and any assembly requirements are confirmed with the quotation.
Reproducing an existing standoff
An old drawing, equipment part record or unworn spare can help document an unavailable component.
Sample geometry and known dimensions
Reverse engineering documents the existing part for manufacture. Worn ends, damaged threads, crushed faces and distorted shoulders may no longer represent the required dimensions.
Identify damaged areas and provide reliable dimensions where available. Customer-specified changes need an updated drawing and revision. Unknown dimensions or material requirements need clarification before machining.
Your specified grade
Give the full material callout, required brand or filler and permitted substitutions. Existing records can identify material requirements that a physical sample cannot establish.

Start with a drawing, specification, dimensioned sketch or details of an available sample. Identify each component and any separately requested hardware.
Part definition
Part number and revision, finished length, outside profile, openings, shoulders and end features. Include exact thread callouts, depths, specified tolerances, finish and reliable sample dimensions.
Material and supply
Exact grade, required brand or filler, permitted substitutions and requested documents. Identify separate hardware and unresolved dimensions, material or special requirements.
Order details
Quantity by part, repeat needs, requested timing and previous CDS order reference. Threaded features, configuration, material availability and machining scope require confirmation.
